Germany forward Felix Nmecha has explained why players from Germany and Curacao formed a prayer circle in the middle of the pitch just moments after Sunday’s World Cup game at Houston Stadium.
Nmecha, who was among the goalscorers in Germany’s dominant 7-1 victory, revealed the deeper meaning behind the post-match huddle that caught the attention of fans in Texas.
Instead of a standard post-game handshake, Germany’s Jonathan Tah and Nmecha made a direct path toward their opponents to gather together.
Asked why they were standing in a circle with players from Curacao, Nmecha said: “In the game we are opponents, but after the game we are all Christians, we are all brothers.”
Despite the lopsided scoreline, the gathering was an act of mutual respect and shared conviction. He added: “We just did a little prayer together because we are still very grateful. The result is, of course, nice for us, but we all believe that Jesus is glorified through the game. That’s why we came and prayed together.”
The match itself began with Germany making a near-perfect start to their World Cup campaign, though Curacao provided the tournament with an early fairytale moment. As the smallest country ever to qualify for the tournament, they briefly dared to dream when Livano Comenencia netted a 21st-minute equalizer to make it 1-1.
However, the overwhelming pre-match favorites proved far too strong. A clinical performance sealed the hefty win for Germany, featuring goals from: Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav.
For the 27-year-old Nmecha, incorporating his beliefs into his football career is a consistent practice. On his Instagram bio, for example, he writes: “Football is my passion, Jesus is my foundation.”
He has frequently used his platform to highlight his faith, a tradition that began early in his international career. After making his debut for the German national team in 2023, he said: “It’s a great honour and a blessing to be called up to the national team for the first time. This is truly a moment I will never forget and I give all the glory to Jesus.”
Fans have also grown accustomed to Nmecha’s trademark goal celebration, where he points to himself and then toward heaven. “I want to show that Jesus died for my sins, He washed away my sins,” he told Wolfsburg’s YouTube channel.
