Why I quit acting in 2019 — Deyemi Okanlawon

Popular Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon has disclosed that he temporarily stepped away from acting in 2019 after becoming dissatisfied with the quality of roles he was offered and the financial rewards that came with them.

Speaking during a recent episode of the CreativiTea podcast, the actor reflected on a challenging period in his career, explaining that acting no longer gave him the sense of fulfilment he had hoped for.

Okanlawon said he had resigned from his corporate job to pursue acting full-time with the expectation that the profession would be both creatively and financially rewarding.

However, he said his experience turned out differently, leaving him frustrated with the projects he worked on and the remuneration he received.

According to the actor, the disappointment eventually led him to step away from the industry and return to a regular office job.

“So, I quit acting in 2019. I quit because the pay and the work were nonsense. And I just felt like I didn’t leave 9 – 5 work to come and do mediocre work.

“It was difficult to wake up in the morning and go to work, and what is the point of being passionate about something and then not being fulfilled by it. So I quit and then went back to 9-5 work”, he said.
