Friday, directed the council chairmen to enforce a strict “no-work, no-pay” policy against participating workers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that he had directed the council leadership to clamp down on unapproved absence.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We have directed the chairmen of the area councils to call their teachers and state clearly: if anybody participates in this, we will implement no-work, no-pay.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Enough is enough; we cannot continue with this,” Wike warned.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minister rejected the rationale behind the industrial action, asserting that all legitimate demands raised by the teaching body, including promotions and operational matters, had been substantially resolved or were actively being implemented.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We want to state categorically and let it be known to the public: this so-called strike declaration is political, and we will not accept it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“There is no basis for anybody to call for a strike. We don’t have any issue with the Local Education Authorities or primary schools. Everything we have agreed on, we are implementing,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wike noted that secondary school teachers and other key union segments had distanced themselves from the strike action, recognising that the demands were already being met.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing the political underpinnings of the shutdown, the minister directly challenged the political neutrality of the local NLC leadership.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He alleged that the union chairperson was a former candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the last February FCT area council elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“You can see his interest. He is trying to ensure the FCT is in crisis as a political tool, telling voters that pupils are at home. Up till now, I have not heard that INEC has been able to call or draw the attention of the vice presidential candidate of the ADC, Rotimi Amaechi, to this,” the minister said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also challenged the media to press the opposition for accountability instead of staying neutral in the face of what he called unsubstantiated insults against the president and his supporters.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wike raised questions about projects during Amaechi’s time as governor of Rivers State, including a multi-million-dollar hospital, the state monorail, the sale of a state-owned gas turbine and a state-wide fumigation contract.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I challenge him. Ask him the $10 million you paid to a Cuban company to fumigate Rivers State so there will be no mosquito bite. Up till now, mosquitoes have been biting Rivers people, including myself. Ask him, ‘The ₦68 billion monorail – where is the monorail?’ Ask him, Where is the $308 million with which you sold our gas turbine?” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He warned that continued attacks on the president and his supporters would meet resistance from supporters across the country, particularly in Rivers State, and added that thieves and lunatics will not preside over Nigeria.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“If he continues along this line, it may be difficult for him to campaign in Rivers. And I want somebody to go and write it down. Because we will not take that. We will not,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the strike declared by the FCT Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Wike described it as a politically motivated attempt to blackmail the administration. He said the FCT Administration had met all its obligations to local government workers and teachers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We want to state categorically and let it be known to the public that this so-called strike declaration is political, and we will not accept it. We will not accept it because there’s no basis for anybody to call for a strike. We don’t have any issue with anybody, either be it the area council, local education, primary authority, or secondary schools; we have no issues,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He announced the immediate implementation of a “no work, no pay” policy across all Area Councils.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minister said major education bodies, including the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), had explicitly dissociated themselves from the strike because existing agreements were already being carried out.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the FCT NLC Chairman, Hon. Stephen Knabayi, was a candidate of the ADC in the last Area Council elections and warned against using industrial action for political gain.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“And you can see his interest trying to see that FCT is in crisis, and then he wants to use it as a political tool that FCT teachers are at home, and nobody is teaching students; how can you now come and vote for a government when the pupils are at home? We cannot accept that blackmail. There is no such approval, and we will not permit it,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To enforce the decision, Wike mandated the FCT Department of Development Control, alongside security agencies, to initiate an immediate clearance in the affected areas.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We have directed Development Control, in conjunction with security agencies, to go and chase them away before we begin to have security problems. We don’t have any issue with the Local Education Authorities or primary schools. Everything we have agreed on, we are implementing,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Wike noted that secondary school teachers and other key union segments had distanced themselves from the strike action, recognising that the demands were already being met.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Addressing the political underpinnings of the shutdown, the minister directly challenged the political neutrality of the local NLC leadership.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He alleged that the union chairperson was a former candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in the last February FCT area council elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“You can see his interest. He is trying to ensure the FCT is in crisis as a political tool, telling voters that pupils are at home.
