A 26-year-old woman named R Niang died while attempting to terminate a four-month pregnancy. According to the daily newspaper Libération, a judicial inquiry has been requested by the prosecutor of Pikine-Guédiawaye (a suburb of Dakar), and two arrests have been made so far. The case began on 26th August around 2am, when the on-call doctor at the Yeumbeul Health Centre informed the police station of the arrival of the lifeless body of a woman identified as R Niang. According to the doctor, her boyfriend stated that the victim, four months pregnant, attempted an abortion at a facility without further details. Having experienced pain after receiving treatment, her boyfriend claims to have called a home health aide who administered an IV drip to her at home, after which the victim lost consciousness. Taken to the health centre, the doctor determined that the victim was already deceased. The police arrested her boyfriend and the home health aide who took her to the health centre. They are identified as Cheikh Dia, 29, a tailor residing in Yeumbeul Asecna, and Jules Diédhiou, 78, a home health aide also residing in Yeumbeul Asecna.
Saint-Louis gay trial postponed to 14th September
The public prosecutor at the Saint-Louis High Court, Baye Thiam, announced the new hearing date in the case involving several people being prosecuted, notably for criminal conspiracy, acts against nature, and intentional transmission of HIV.
According to a statement from his office, the case, initially scheduled for a hearing on 17th August, has been postponed to 14th September the date set for closing arguments. The case stems from proceedings that led to the arrest of 13 people. On 8th July, 2026, the investigating judge issued a committal order leading to the arrest of the men.

7-year-old boy drowns in quarry in Diaobé
A tragedy occurred on Wednesday afternoon, 2nd September, in Diaobé, in the Vélingara department (southern Senegal). A seven-year-old boy, identified as Mamady Sidibé, drowned in a quarry located behind the local high school. The tragedy occurred around 3pm. The exact circumstances in which the child ended up in the water are currently unknown. Emergency services were alerted and recovered the body. The remains of young Mamady Sidibé were first taken to the Diaobé health post before being transferred to the morgue at the Kounkané health post. This latest tragic loss has plunged the victim’s family and the people of Diaobé into deep sorrow.
Fugitive Pierre Diatta arrested at Gambian border
Pierre Diatta, also known as Assane Diatta, 41, a former warehouse worker at Mamelles Jaboot in Dakar, presented as the sole survivor of the gang of twelve employees already tried and convicted in the dairy embezzlement case, was finally arrested at the Gambian border. According to L’Observateur, he had escaped the first wave of arrests before disappearing. Tried by the Pikine-Guédiawaye court (a suburb of Dakar), he was sentenced to two years in prison, one year of which is suspended, and fined 500,000 CFA francs. The case stems from a complaint filed by the Mamelles company in December 2023. Twelve employees were arrested and subsequently sentenced to two years in prison. Pierre Diatta, however, had managed to evade investigators. After several trips, notably to Kaolack and then Casamance, he was finally apprehended at the Gambian border. He was remanded in custody on 7th August, 2026, and charged with conspiracy and theft committed in the course of his duties. The prosecutor had requested a two-year prison sentence and a 2 million CFA franc fine for Pierre Diatta. In court, the defence argued for acquittal based on reasonable doubt. The court acquitted the former warehouse worker of forgery and use of forged public documents, but found him guilty on the other charges against him.
Pierre Diatta was ultimately sentenced to two years in prison, one of which was suspended, and fined 500,000 FCFA. In the civil case, the Mamelles Jaboot, who had sought 30 million FCFA in damages, were awarded 15 million FCFA.
