World cup 2026: African teams made us proud, but FIFA must fix refereeing — Elumelu

Nigerian businessman and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has urged FIFA to improve the quality of officiating at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, warning that persistent poor refereeing could undermine the integrity of the sport.

In a post shared on his verified X account on Friday, Elumelu praised the African teams that featured at the tournament, saying they had proudly represented the continent and demonstrated the growing quality of African football on the global stage.

“Well done to all the African countries that represented our continent at the World Cup. You made Africa proud and showed the world what African football is capable of,” he wrote.

However, the chairman of Heirs Holdings expressed concern over the standard of officiating at the tournament, urging FIFA to address the issue.

“But @FIFAWorldCup needs to improve the standard of refereeing because if poor officiating continues, it will damage the game,” Elumelu stated.

He concluded by congratulating the African representatives for their performances, saying, “Congratulations once again to every African team.”
