The opening round of matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered far more than goals and upsets, it gave football fans breathtaking and exciting action to delight in.
As the first World Cup featuring 48 teams, the tournament has already rewritten parts of football history, with several players and nations setting new records or reaching significant milestones during the first set of group-stage fixtures.
From Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo extending their legendary World Cup legacies to Kylian Mbappe becoming France’s all-time leading scorer and Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha making history at 40, here is a list of the major records broken during Round 1 of the 2026 World Cup.
1. First-ever 48-team World Cup
The 2026 edition is the largest World Cup in history, expanding from 32 to 48 teams for the first time and producing four new debutants. The tournament also features a record 104 matches across the United States, Canada and Mexico, making it the biggest FIFA World Cup ever staged. North America so far has witnessed 48 nations take centre stage, a feat that has never been previously recorded.
The number of debut nations at a single tournament is itself a new record, with Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan all making their debut at the tournament.
2. Messi and Ronaldo’s six World Cup appearances record
Argentina captain Lionel Messi earned the all-time record of six FIFA World Cup appearances during Argentina’s opening match against Algeria while Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo also achieved the feat during his team’s opening match against DR Congo.
The achievement saw both legendary players become the only players in history to feature at six different World Cup tournaments, surpassing the previous record of five held by Lothar Matthäus.
3. Mbappe becomes France’s all-time top scorer
France captain Kylian Mbappé reached another landmark after scoring twice in France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal.
The double made Mbappe France’s outright all-time leading goalscorer, adding another major achievement to a career that already includes a World Cup title and a World Cup final hat-trick.
His brace also moved him to within two goals of Miroslav Klose’s World Cup scoring record of 16 goals.
4. Harry Kane equals England World Cup scoring record
England captain Harry Kane scored twice in the 4-2 win over Croatia to draw level with Gary Lineker as England’s all-time leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup.
Both players now have 10 World Cup goals, with Kane expected to surpass the record as England continue their campaign.
5. Kane joins England appearance elite
The Croatia match also marked Kane’s 115th England appearance, moving him level with David Beckham among the country’s most-capped players.
If England make a deep run into the tournament, Kane could move closer to the national appearance record held by Peter Shilton.
6. Vozinha becomes one of the oldest stars in World Cup history
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha produced one of the stories of the tournament after inspiring a goalless draw against Spain.
At 40 years and 12 days, he became the oldest player to appear in a nation’s debut World Cup match, surpassing the record set on Sunday by Curacao’s Eloy Room.
Vozinha also broke the official World Cup record for being the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his World Cup debut. He made seven crucial saves to secure a historic 0-0 draw for Cape Verde against European champions Spain. He was named Player of the Match after a series of outstanding saves.
7. Scotland’s oldest World Cup goalscorer
Scotland midfielder John McGinn became his country’s oldest World Cup goalscorer after netting the winner against Haiti.
At 31 years and 238 days, McGinn surpassed the previous Scottish record held by Kenny Dalglish.
8. Canada win their first World Cup point
Co-hosts Canada finally earned their first point at a FIFA World Cup after drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Canada had previously lost all six matches played at the 1986 and 2022 World Cups.
9. Qatar secure first World Cup point
Qatar also reached a historic milestone after drawing 1-1 with Switzerland.
The result delivered Qatar’s first point in World Cup history following three defeats as hosts in 2022.
10. Most red cards in a World Cup opening match
The tournament opener between Mexico and South Africa entered the history books after producing three red cards.
No previous opening match in FIFA World Cup history had seen as many dismissals, making it the most card-heavy curtain-raiser on record.
