World Cup 2026 Young Player award favourites ranked as Cubarsi leads race

Spain defender Pau Cubarsí has emerged as the leading contender for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Young Player of the Tournament award after a series of commanding displays helped La Roja reach the final.

The 19-year-old Barcelona centre-back has been one of the standout performers in North America, anchoring Spain’s defence with a string of composed performances that have strengthened his case to succeed Argentina’s Enzo Fernández, who won the award at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The FIFA Young Player Award is presented to the best player aged 21 or under at the tournament. Since its introduction in 2006, it has recognised emerging stars including Lukas Podolski, Thomas Müller, Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappé and Fernández.

Cubarsí’s mature performances have placed him ahead of several highly rated youngsters, including Spain teammate Lamine Yamal and France’s Désiré Doué, as the race enters its final stages.

1. Pau Cubarsí (Spain)

Cubarsí has become the favourite after playing a pivotal role in Spain’s run to the World Cup final. The Barcelona defender has featured in every game, helping Spain boast one of the tournament’s best defensive records while displaying remarkable composure for a teenager. His performance in Spain’s 2-0 semi-final victory over France further strengthened his credentials.

2. Lamine Yamal (Spain)

Already regarded as one of football’s brightest talents, Yamal remains firmly in contention despite not producing his most prolific tournament. The 18-year-old has contributed a goal and several influential displays as Spain reached the final, adding to the reputation that has already earned him multiple individual honours at club level.

3. Désiré Doué (France)

France winger Désiré Doué impressed throughout Les Bleus’ run to the semi-finals. The 21-year-old scored against Norway, won the decisive penalty in the last-16 victory over Paraguay and consistently threatened opposition defences before France’s elimination.

4. Ayyoub Bouaddi (Morocco)

Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi has enjoyed a breakthrough tournament. The 18-year-old Lille star produced composed performances in central midfield as the Atlas Lions reached the quarter-finals, attracting further interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs.

5. Antonio Nusa (Norway)

Norway winger Antonio Nusa played a key role in his country’s impressive World Cup campaign. The RB Leipzig attacker combined pace and direct attacking play with crucial goals, helping Norway reach the last eight before their exit.

6. Johan Manzambi (Switzerland)

Swiss youngster Johan Manzambi emerged as one of the tournament’s surprise packages, contributing three goals and two assists during Switzerland’s run to the quarter-finals. His performances have reportedly attracted Premier League interest.

7. Nico O’Reilly (England)

England’s Nico O’Reilly has established himself as Thomas Tuchel’s preferred left-back during the tournament. The 21-year-old has added balance and defensive solidity to the Three Lions’ backline as they continue their bid for World Cup glory.

8. Chemsdine Talbi (Morocco)

Chemsdine Talbi completes the list after making an impact largely from the bench for Morocco. The Sunderland midfielder registered an assist in the knockout rounds and has enhanced his reputation despite being considered an outside contender for the award.
