THE FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, heartbreak, the Blord-VDM saga and the mysterious “67” Gen Z meme were among the stories that scenic Nigerians rushing to Google in the first seven months of 2026.

Fresh Google Trends data covering January to July 2026 showed that Nigerians turned to the search engine to understand major sporting events, geopolitical tensions, celebrity controversies, deaths, internet culture and developments affecting their everyday lives.

“Every big story now has a second life in the search bar,” Google said in its review of the trends.

“When the Super Eagles lost a semi-final on penalties, when a strait most people had never thought about pushed up the price of petrol, when a music promoter’s car crash reopened a three-year-old argument, Nigerians went to Google.”

According to the data, the FIFA World Cup emerged as the biggest search story of the period, generating interest several times higher than other major topics.

Nigerians followed the tournament closely, searching for information on the Super Eagles’ campaign, the opening ceremony featuring Burna Boy and Shakira, major matches and the eventual final.

“The World Cup over everything,” Google said, noting that “no story came close.”

The Africa Cup of Nations also dominated searches in January, particularly after Nigeria’s semi-final defeat to Morocco on penalties.

“January belonged to AFCON, and to heartbreak,” Google said, adding that “Nigeria vs Morocco” became one of the biggest individual queries of 2026.

The search record, according to Google, showed “a country going through the full arc: fixtures, hope, heartbreak, and ‘AFCON final’ anyway.”

February produced another surprise, as the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics attracted significant search interest among Nigerians, including searches around ice hockey and other winter sports.

“Nigeria watched a Winter Olympics,” Google said.

The company added: “Curiosity, it turns out, does not need snow.”

Beyond sports, developments involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz also drove significant searches, highlighting how international events could quickly become local concerns.

Queries including “Iran news”, “Israel Iran war” and “strait of hormuz meaning” spiked as tensions around the strategic waterway raised concerns about global oil supplies and prices.

“Geopolitics rarely trends in the abstract,” Google said.

It explained that when tensions around the Strait of Hormuz intensified, Nigerians searched for both the international developments and their implications.

“A war three thousand miles away was also a story about the cost of the ride to work,” Google said.

The controversy involving cryptocurrency entrepreneur Blord and social media activist VeryDarkMan was another major search driver.
