Xenophobia: Third batch of evacuated Nigerians arrives Lagos

Daily Post about 3 hours 1 mins read

The third batch of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa has arrived in Lagos as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing evacuation programme.

The Air Peace flight carrying about 271 evacuees landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport shortly before 11 a.m on Tuesday.

Recall that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, on Monday said the third batch of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa would arrive in Lagos on Tuesday (today) with 271 returnees on board.

The evacuation followed the June 30 deadline declared by vigilante groups and other organisation his demanding the departure of undocumented migrants from South Africa.

In a nationwide address on Monday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa acknowledged public concerns over illegal immigration but warned that protests must remain peaceful and within the confines of the law.

He cautioned against violence, intimidation, vandalism and attacks on foreign nationals, insisting that immigration enforcement remains the responsibility of the government.

DAILY POST recalls that the first batch of the returnees was 258 while the second batch has 66 Nigerians.
