The appointment of former Zamfara State Governor and Senator representing Zamfara West, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, as Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections has been described as a strategic and timely decision capable of strengthening the party’s chances at the polls.
The Chairman of the Senator Abdulaziz Yari Political Organisation in Zamfara State, Dr Lawal M. Liman, made the assertion in a statement issued on Saturday, following Yari’s appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Presidency on Saturday formally constituted the APC Presidential Campaign Council, with Tinubu as Chairman, Vice President Kashim Shettima as Vice-Chairman I, and APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, as Vice-Chairman II. Yari was named Director-General, while Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, was appointed Secretary.
Liman, who is also Chairman of the Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Kaduna State, described Yari’s appointment as evidence of Tinubu’s confidence in his political experience and organisational capacity.
He said Yari had demonstrated political sagacity and commitment to party organisation over the years, having served as a state secretary and chairman of the party, a national party officer and subsequently as governor of Zamfara State for two terms.
According to him, Yari’s experience extends beyond Zamfara, noting that he also served as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and played a prominent role in the political negotiations that preceded the formation of the APC in 2013/2014.
Liman recalled that Yari was among the major political stakeholders involved in the merger of opposition political parties that eventually produced the APC and paved the way for the party’s victory in the 2015 presidential election.
He said such experience in grassroots mobilisation, party administration and election management would be valuable to the APC as it prepares for the 2027 presidential contest.
“This appointment is not only a reward for loyalty and competence, but also a strategic move that will guarantee victory for the party in the coming elections, In Shaa Allah. Senator Yari has the capacity, network and political will to deliver,” Liman said.
He congratulated Yari on the appointment and pledged the political organisation’s support for the campaign council.
Liman also assured President Tinubu of the group’s commitment to supporting the APC’s mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.
Yari has meanwhile accepted the appointment, expressing gratitude to President Tinubu and the APC leadership for the confidence reposed in him.
The constitution of the campaign council marks the formal commencement of the APC’s campaign preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with the council bringing together senior party leaders and political actors across various mobilisation, electoral, media and administrative directorates.
