The Benin Palace playfield in Benin City came alive on Friday evening as youthful exuberance triumphed over experience in a high-stakes novelty football match held to commemorate the 10th Coronation Anniversary of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II.

The match, one of the key events lined up for the historic anniversary, kicked off in royal splendor after Oba Ewuare II performed the ceremonial kick-off.

It was a symbolic clash between wisdom and youth, as the Palace Chiefs took on the Royal Sceptre Bearers in a keenly contested encounter.

The Sceptre Bearers, led by Senior Sceptre Bearer Frank Nomwengho, who thrilled spectators with mesmerising dribbling skills, dominated much of the play.

The deadlock was broken early when 15-year-old winger, Aizenomwan Eboh fired the youngsters into the lead just six minutes into the game, sparking wild celebrations.

Unfazed by the pace and energy of the young lads, the Chiefs, marshalled like the fortified walls of the ancient Benin Kingdom, stood firm and resisted relentless pressure.

George Obasogie, a chief, led several attempts to find an equalizer, but the ironclad defence of the Sceptre Bearers held firm until the final whistle.

The match ended 1-0 in favour of the Royal Sceptre Bearers.

Among the dignitaries who witnessed the encounter in royal grandeur were the Benin monarch, his queens, members of the royal family, palace chiefs and functionaries, Edo State Football Association Chairman, Fred Erhunmwunse, and a large crowd of jubilant spectators.

Speaking after the match, the coach of the winning side and retired FIFA-graded referee, Steven Amadin, praised his players for adhering strictly to instructions.

He commended Oba Ewuare II for incorporating sports into the anniversary celebration.

Also speaking, the Edo FA chairman described the novelty match as a fitting appetizer to the grand finale of the Oba Ewuare Cup.

He lauded the monarch for using sports as a tool to foster unity and youth engagement.

Adding traditional colour to the celebration was a thrilling traditional wrestling exhibition, Igba-Eze.

Current national champion, Fred Osamudiamen, defeated 2018 All-Africa champion, Martins Amasin, to clinch the title, while Amasa Oko finished third.

Presentation of rewards to winners and participants in the various sporting events will be held on November 21, 2026.
