The expulsion is to serve as a deterrent to others who may want to do the same.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Recall that the said student had, in an interview that went viral, claimed that her project topic was ‘Citizenship’ when there is no such topic as Citizenship in the Department. metropolis.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Executive Director, Health, Safety, Environment and Community of NMDPRA, Mustapha Lamorde, who represented the Authority’s Chief Executive, Rabiu Umar, said the affected stations would face sanctions for allegedly taking advantage of unsuspecting consumers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Dr. Lamorde explained that the exercise also involved testing petroleum products to ensure they met the required specifications.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>During the surveillance, Rainoil filling station along Station Road, Township, was queried over alleged under-dispensing and products said to be below the required specifications, while its management was warned.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>MRS filling station at the CFC axis of Port Harcourt and Stageoil filling station at the Craft Centre axis of Port Harcourt\u002FAba Road were sealed over alleged sharp practices.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>TotalEnergies filling station at Garrison Junction was also advised by the regulatory officials over alleged over-dispensing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Lamorde urged members of the public to report filling stations suspected of engaging in sharp practices to the NMDPRA office in Port Harcourt.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said, “Our men are always there and we want to assure Nigerians and even our brothers here in Rivers State and all over the country that we will continue to do our job, and I see this as a form of awareness, so that Nigerians should know that the authority is always there for them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We have our website, we have our social media handles, we have our contact numbers that we display.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Nigerians can always contact us, and we are there to listen.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Wherever you see any form of infringement as a Nigerian, you have the contact to call us and we will come and sanction that particular retail Nigeria’s next phase of growth depends on how fast we close them: price gaps, policy gaps and infrastructure gaps,” adding that, “smuggling has reduced, but persistent price gaps, informal networks and porous borders make complete elimination unlikely.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Rewane said that the telecoms are the least vulnerable to impact of smuggling while building materials and pharmaceuticals have low exposure to its effects. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to him, “FMCG and downstream refining rely heavily on volume to offset high production costs and thin margins.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“This makes smuggled imports catastrophic as they destroy market share and scale.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Unlike FMCGs, healthcare consumers rarely substitute trusted (pharmaceutical) brands for open-market alternatives.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He identified the victims of smuggling as the government, local manufacturers, formal businesses.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to him, “government loses Customs’ revenue, taxes and duties. Local manufacturers face unfair competition from cheaper untaxed imports.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Formal businesses and importers lose market share to informal competitors.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He also said that smuggling could expose consumers to unsafe, counterfeit or substandard products and force financial system to lose formal foreign exchange and transaction flows\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Rewane said that the depreciation of the Naira is accelerating the value of smuggled goods across the Nigerian borders as the value of seizures that were made by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) rose from N17.56 billion in 2023 to N59 billion in 2025.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He further said, “Smuggling has grown with the weak Naira, and customs data tells the story. The value of seizures doubled from N17.56 billion in 2023 to N35.29 billion in 2024, when officers made 3,555 seizures, including 183,527 bags of rice and over 1.7 million litres of fuel.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“In 2025, the number of seizures fell to just over 2,500, but their value rose to more than N59bn, over three times the 2023 figure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The pattern points to a fact: as the Naira depreciated, the value of contraband rose sharply.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Rewane said that a large informal market, demand for cheaper goods and price differentials with neighbouring countries are among the factors that accelerate smuggling.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He suggested that more formal ECOWAS and Intra-African trades could reduce incentives for some forms of smuggling.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Rewane pointed out that even though the African Continental Trade Area (AfCFTA) is not automatically an anti-smuggling agreement, “its trade-facilitation provisions can reduce smuggling by lowering the cost of legal trade.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to him, the future of smuggling could be reduced if Naira could appreciate to its fair value and the government pursues lower import duties that narrows the gap between formal and informal imports while manufacturers focus more on the domestic market.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He stated that the short-term benefits of smuggling to the consumers include lower prices, and increased availability of some goods but warned that this can put pressure on formal sellers and make domestic producers lose market share.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Therefore, “investment may weaken, government revenue can decline, product standards and consumer protection may be compromised,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Rewane also said that smuggling can cost lives as unsafe transportation and illicit fuel movement can result in accidents, fires and loss of lives.
