2026 World Cup: Mbappe sets two new records as France beat Senegal 3-1

Daily Post about 3 hours 1 mins read

France captain, Kylian Mbappe, has two new records as they opened the 2026 World Cup with a pulsating 3-1 victory over Senegal on Tuesday night.

Mbappe failed to impress in the opening half of the match.

But in the second half, after being denied a penalty, the Real Madrid attacker ran onto Michael Olise’s pass to open the scoring.

The goal ensured he drew level with Olivier Giroud (57 goals) as France’s all-time top scorer.

Bradley Barcola climbed off the bench to double Les Bleus lead, before Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal.

But Mbappe had the finally say, picking up a loose ball and sending it past Eduoard Mendy.

The second goal saw him become his country’s top scorer in history. It was also his 14th World Cup and no Frenchman has scored more.

Mbappe also has more World Cup goals than Lionel Messi.
