Argentina will not face Portugal in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, despite the wishes of fans and pundits.
This means Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo can only face each other in the final of the tournament next month.
Portugal finished as runners-up in Group K, following a 0-0 draw with Colombia in their final group fixture.
They will now face Croatia for a place in the last 16.
On the other hand, Argentina emerged as Group J winners and will take on debutants Cape Verde in the Round of 32.
The South Americans are the current holders of the trophy and could have an easy route to the final.
