2027: ADC’s Adio decries rent crisis, promises improve living condition for Lagos residents

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Eti-Osa Constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Ayo Adio, has said he is contesting the 2027 election to push for the use of public resources to improve the living conditions of working-class residents.

Adio made the remarks during an interview on Vanguard Politics Hub, where he discussed his campaign, legislative priorities and plans for constituents.

He said his decision to seek elective office was driven by what he described as the poor allocation of public resources in Lagos, particularly the perceived prioritisation of the interests of political elites.

“I am running because I want to make public resources work for working people in Lagos,” Adio said.

According to him, workers have not received sufficient benefits from the state’s resources despite contributing to its economy over the years.

“For too long public resources has been used to maintain the vanities of the elites in Lagos State, particularly the political elites and those connected to these elites, and working people have had the short end of the stick for twenty five years,” he said.

He said his primary objective, if elected, would be to promote policies that channel the state’s wealth and resources towards improving the welfare of ordinary residents.

“Principally, I’m running to ensure that the wealth, the resources of Lagos State is used to improve the living conditions of working people in Lagos State,” he said.

On his assessment of Eti-Osa, Adio said that the constituency had significant human and material resources that could make it one of the best governed areas in the country.

“I believe that Eti-Osa local government is blessed, immensely blessed with material resources and human resources to be the most well governed and well run local government, not just in Lagos, but across the entire country,” he said.

He, however, lamented what he described as years of poor management, saying the situation had prevented the area from realising its potential.

According to him, residents contend with poor waste management, deteriorating inner roads, damaged infrastructure, loitering and the proliferation of street gangs.

He said these challenges had contributed to the deterioration of the environment and strengthened his resolve to seek a seat in the state legislature.

Adio also identified housing and rent as a major component of his proposed legislative agenda, although he stressed that his programme was broader than rent relief.

“It’s not just hinged on rent relief, but that forms a cardinal part of my legislative agenda and vision for the Lagos State House of Assembly,” he said.

The ADC candidate said many working residents in Lagos spend a significant proportion of their earnings on accommodation, a situation he described as unsustainable amid rising rents.

“As we speak, working people expend an average of sixty to seventy percent of their income on rents in Lagos. That’s completely unsustainable,” he said.

He added that annual increases in rent were further eroding residents’ purchasing power, particularly as wages had failed to rise at a comparable rate.

He warned that the trend was not only weakening the financial capacity of working-class residents but also placing increasing pressure on Lagos’ middle class.

“It’s not only the deteriorating of purchasing power of the average working person, it’s also the pauperization of the middle class in Lagos State, and we can’t continue on this trajectory,” he said.
