The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Jabir Yusuf, for allegedly shooting and killing his age mate, Hassan Mohamed, in Toro Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on Monday at about 11:30 a.m. in Rinjin Gura village, Zalau Ward, Toro LGA.
The command’s spokesman, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu.
According to Habib, the police received a report from a resident of Zalau Ward that the suspect had allegedly fired a Dane gun at Mohamed, hitting him in the neck.
He said operatives of the Gumau Division were mobilised to the scene following the report and evacuated the victim to Toro General Hospital for medical attention.
Mohamed was, however, pronounced dead by the doctor on duty upon arrival at the hospital.
Habib said the deceased’s remains were subsequently released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
He added that the suspect was arrested and the Dane gun allegedly used in the incident was recovered as an exhibit.
The case, according to the spokesman, has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Bauchi, for discreet investigation and possible prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police commiserated with the deceased’s family and ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He also cautioned residents against illegal possession and reckless use of firearms, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
