Groups declare support for APC ahead of 2027 elections

By Musa Ubandawaki, Sokoto

SOKOTO — The Association of Deregistered Political Parties in Sokoto State, comprising 58 former political parties, has declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The association made the declaration at a press conference along Bodinga Road in Sokoto, saying its decision followed what it described as an assessment of the policies, programmes and development initiatives of the Tinubu and Aliyu administrations at the federal and state levels.

Chairman of the association, Ahmed Ja’o, said members had reviewed the performance of the Sokoto State Government over the past three years and concluded that Aliyu deserved another term to consolidate the administration’s programmes.

Ja’o cited interventions in infrastructure, rural development, workers’ welfare and religious affairs among the considerations that informed the association’s decision.

He particularly mentioned the Urban Renewal Programme, which he said had transformed parts of Sokoto metropolis, as well as rural road projects that had improved connectivity between communities across the state.

According to him, the administration’s workers’ welfare measures, including implementation of the new minimum wage and payment of outstanding gratuities owed to retired civil servants, also influenced the group’s position.

The association claimed that the state government had cleared about N14 billion in gratuity arrears, describing the payment as a significant step towards addressing the financial challenges facing retired workers.

The group also cited the construction of more than 60 Jumu’at mosques and the re-establishment of the Sokoto State Hisbah Board as among the initiatives it considered significant.

Ja’o said: “After a careful assessment of the achievements recorded in Sokoto State within the last three years, we have resolved to support Governor Ahmed Aliyu for a second term so that the ongoing programmes can be sustained and consolidated.”

The association also endorsed Tinubu for another term, urging its members and supporters to mobilise support for the continuation of the APC-led administration at the federal and state levels.

“We have equally resolved to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for another term in office because we believe that continuity is necessary for the consolidation of the policies and programmes of his administration,” Ja’o said.

Representatives of the participating groups subsequently appended their signatures to the joint declaration endorsing the two leaders ahead of the 2027 polls.

The parties listed on the document included KOWA, APA, CPP, AAP, ASD, APDA, CNP, BNPP and ANRP, among others.

The association said the declaration was a collective decision by its members and pledged to mobilise support for Tinubu and Aliyu as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

The endorsement adds to the political realignments taking place in Sokoto State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
