Consistent with its tradition of hosting the Government College Ughelli, (GCU) Relays in the second Saturday of November, the 8th edition has been confirmed for November 14th, 2026.
The Confirmation was sealed by the President General Worldwide, Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA), HRM Albert Akpomudje, SAN at the last NEC meeting which also gave final approval to other activities of the body, including the Annual Dinner in Benin City (October) and the Lagos Luncheon in December.
The November 14th date is coming on the heals of the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal 6th – 10th that will have the new helmsman of the GCU Relays, Omatseye Nesiama officiating fully as one of the Technical Directors of the first of its kind event in Africa .
Nesiama, a former Technical Director of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN), will take total control of the 8th edition of the annual Inter-school collegiate meeting.
The consummate Sport Administrator, who also chairs the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC Technical and Development Commission, will effectively liaise with both the Delta State Sports Commission (providers of the TimeTronics ) and NAATO, with a firm commitment to delivering a near perfect and hitch-free GCU Relays.
Now in its 9th year, with an edition lost to Covid-19, the annual GCU Relays provides for the resuscitation of the old secondary schools athletics rivalry spanning the decades.
Over 30 schools and 500 student-athletes are expected to burn the tartan tracks of the Government College Ughelli, built and donated by the NNPC – Shell joint venture.
