I learnt with utter disbelief of the devastating death of legendary musical icon Moses Matovu, particularly given the circumstances surrounding his passing.
Moses Matovu was Afrigo, and Afrigo was Moses. His contribution to Uganda’s music industry was immense, and his music brought immeasurable joy to generations of people across Uganda and beyond.
I first met the deceased way back in 1991, when Afrigo Band was based at Ggaba Beach. I subsequently continued to patronise the band at the various places where it performed after leaving Ggaba.
I was privileged to put up my comedy skits alongside the great Afrigo Band at several venues, including the House of Entertainment at Crested Towers, Kajjansi, Club Obligatto and Little Flowers, among others.
Those were memorable moments, and I will forever cherish the opportunity to have shared the stage and entertainment spaces with such a legendary group and an iconic musician.
It is deeply painful that a man who brought immeasurable joy and entertainment to so many of us had to lose his life in such a tragic and gruesome manner.
Moses Matovu leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Uganda’s music history. His contribution to Afrigo Band and the country’s entertainment industry will remain part of the memories of those who listened to his music and experienced his performances.
I beseech Allah, the Most Merciful, to grant the soul of Moses Matovu eternal rest and give strength and comfort to his family, friends, fellow musicians and all those mourning his passing.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
