The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, has warned boat users across the state to strictly observe safety measures, particularly during strong winds and adverse weather conditions.
Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency SEMA, Hannafi Yakubu made the warning while commenting on the recent canoe mishap in the state.
DAILY POST had reported that four girls died when a boat carrying eight people capsized in Dudduru Lake, near Kwadige village in Dutse Local Government Area.
We also reported a similar incident that happened in Malamawar Yandutse village of Ringim Local Government Area which claimed 10 lives.
The agency, however, attributed the incidents to overloading and use of old boats by the owners.
“We will not tolerate this, we will ensure that all boat users strictly observe safety measures to prevent loss of lives and property,” the statement warned.
State Commissioner for Special Duties and Humanitarian Affairs, Hon. Danladi Sankara said the state government was worried on the numerous cases of canoe accidents in the state and had taken action to tackle the problem
According to him, the government is making efforts to support canoe owners with new ones and life jackets aimed at minimizing accidents.
SEMA condoled with the families of the deceased and reiterated the need for canoe operators and passengers to prioritise safety and avoid travelling on waterways during dangerous weather conditions.
