Senate President Godswill Akpabio has come under renewed public scrutiny following fresh allegations by United States-based activist Sandra Duru, popularly known as Prof. Mgbeke, who claims she was engaged to mount a campaign against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Duru made the allegation while releasing a purported nine-minute audio recording on social media, describing the recording as only a “sneak peek” of what she says will be a series of further revelations about her dealings with prominent Nigerian politicians.
The latest disclosure represents a dramatic shift from Duru’s earlier public account of the controversy.
In May 2025, Duru had accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of offering her ₦200 million to make damaging allegations against Akpabio. Akpoti-Uduaghan denied the allegations at the time, describing the materials presented by Duru as false and manipulated.
Duru is now presenting a different version of events, alleging that Akpabio himself engaged her to campaign against the Kogi Central senator.
Parts of the newly circulated recording contain a male voice which Duru identifies as that of Akpabio. In the excerpts, the speaker allegedly discusses political developments involving former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Senator Ned Nwoko.
Among the statements attributed to the voice is an alleged comment that Okowa’s decision to join the All Progressives Congress was motivated by concerns over corruption cases rather than political conviction.
Another portion of the recording allegedly contains a discussion about Nwoko, with the speaker purportedly saying that the senator had never supported him but describing himself as a “very forgiving person.” Duru is also heard responding, “Yes Daddy,” according to reports on the recording.
However, the authenticity of the audio remains a major question. The recording has not been independently authenticated, and the identity of the voices, the circumstances in which the conversation took place, the date of the recording and whether the excerpts represent the full conversation have not been independently established.
Duru has also alleged that an aide to the Senate President is negotiating a dollar payment with her in an attempt to persuade her to stop making further disclosures about her alleged dealings with senior politicians.
She claims she was initially promised as much as $5 million by Akpabio but received approximately $800,000 instead. These financial allegations have not been independently verified.
The activist says she feels betrayed and has therefore decided to make public what she describes as previously secret dealings involving Akpabio and other political figures.
The fresh allegations have reopened a controversy that has continued for more than a year and has produced conflicting accounts from Duru, Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan.
As of the latest reports, neither Akpabio nor his office had publicly confirmed or denied the authenticity or contents of the new recording. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s aide also declined to comment on the latest development.
The controversy also has a legal dimension. In January 2026, an FCT High Court reportedly restrained Duru and Meta from further circulating certain materials concerning Akpoti-Uduaghan that the court proceedings characterized as potentially defamatory, pending determination of the substantive case.
