Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed October 2, 2026, for the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, to continue his defence in the alleged cyberbullying case brought against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).
There were unconfirmed reports in the media last month that the DSS could, upon the resumption of court from its vacation, seek a long adjournment to enable Sowore to concentrate on his presidential campaign.
Sowore had in August 2025 published posts on X, formerly Twitter, and Facebook describing President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” and accusing him of lying about the level of corruption in the country.
After he declined several appeals from the DSS to delete the posts, the agency approached the court to determine whether describing another person as a “criminal” amounts to cyberbullying.
At the resumed hearing on Monday, Sowore’s lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, told the court that he had read reports in the media that the DSS would be seeking a long adjournment to enable his client to focus on his presidential campaign.
Responding, however, counsel to the DSS, Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, expressed surprise that Fusika would rely on social media reports on a matter before the court.
Kehinde said instructions from his client were confidential and could not have been based on social media reports, adding that he was ready for the continuation of the defence.
Justice Mohammed Umar subsequently adjourned the case to October 2, 2026, for continuation of defence.
It was earlier reported that the DSS had directed its counsel, Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, to seek an adjournment of the alleged cybercrime case against the AAC presidential candidate until after the 2027 presidential election.
The move, according to a source said to be familiar with the matter, is intended to allow Sowore to fully participate in the electioneering process without the court proceedings constituting a hindrance to his political activities.
