The All Progressives Congress (APC) has donated N52 million to survivors and families of the 37 miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.
Governor Umaru Bago disclosed this on Tuesday when he received the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, during a condolence visit over the incident.
Bago thanked the APC leadership for visiting the state and providing financial support to the affected families and survivors.
He said a state committee led by his deputy, Yakubu Garba, would work with the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Farouk Umar-Bahago, to ensure that the money reached the intended beneficiaries.
Yilwatda earlier expressed the APC’s condolences to the Niger State Government and residents over the deaths.
He described the incident as a difficult period for the state, which he said had recently faced several security challenges.
“This is not a good moment for the country, especially Niger State.
“Recently, you’ve been bedevilled by so many challenges, especially security threats, but we can assure you that our hearts and prayers are with you.
“For the affected families, may God strengthen and comfort them in this challenging period. All this will pass away,” he said.
Yilwatda said the party believed that evil would not overcome the goodness of the people.
He also praised Governor Bago for his response to the incident and assured him of the APC’s continued support for his administration.
The APC national chairman later led members of the NWC to the palace of the Emir of Minna for another condolence visit.
