The Green Finance & Climate Strategy Institute (GFCSI) is pleased to invite applications for the 2026–2027 Climate, Nature & Green Transition Strategy Research Fellowship.
The Fellowship is implemented by GFCSI in strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia.
As GFCSI's flagship leadership and applied research programme, the Fellowship is designed to develop the next generation of Somali professionals who will contribute to climate policy, green transition finance, environmental governance, applied research, and sustainable development.
Combining rigorous learning with practical experience, the Fellowship provides participants with the opportunity to work on real policy and research assignments while developing the technical, analytical, and leadership skills needed to help shape Somalia's green transition.
About the Fellowship
Somalia's green transition depends not only on financial investment but also on strong institutions, effective governance, evidence-based policymaking, and capable professionals who can translate national ambitions into practical solutions.
The GFCSI Climate, Nature & Green Transition Strategy Research Fellowship was established to help build this national capacity by preparing talented young professionals to become future leaders in climate and environmental policy, sustainable finance, governance, and applied research.
Over a 9–12 month programme, Fellows will participate in advanced learning, applied research, mentoring, leadership development, institutional engagement, and collaborative projects while contributing to real policy and institutional priorities.
Fellowship Tracks
Applicants may apply under one of the following strategic tracks.
Green Transition Finance
Climate finance, biodiversity finance, nature finance, sustainable finance, green taxonomy, carbon markets, blended finance, investment readiness, and green investment.
Climate, Environmental & Biodiversity Governance
Institutional strengthening, environmental governance, implementation systems, public financial management, climate governance, and policy coordination.
Applied Research, Knowledge Systems & Local Knowledge Production
Policy research, analytical writing, evidence generation, research methods, knowledge systems, and locally relevant knowledge production.
Climate & Environmental Diplomacy, Policy Influence & Strategic Advocacy
Climate diplomacy, international engagement, strategic communications, negotiation support, policy influence, regional cooperation, and evidence-based advocacy.
What Fellows Will Gain
The Fellowship provides participants with the opportunity to:

Who Should Apply?
The Pilot Cohort (2026–2027) is open to final-year undergraduate students enrolled in accredited universities in Mogadishu, Somalia, who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to public service and sustainable development.
Applicants should be pursuing degrees in fields such as:

● Law

● Development Studies

● Or other related disciplines.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
● Be enrolled in the final year of an accredited undergraduate degree programme.
● Demonstrate strong academic performance.
● Show a genuine interest in climate, environment, governance, finance, or sustainable development.
● Possess strong analytical, research, and communication skills.
● Be committed to completing the Fellowship programme.
● Submit a University Endorsement Letter from their university.
Programme Structure
The Fellowship combines:

Each Fellow will complete a GFCSI Applied Research Paper addressing a real policy or institutional challenge. Selected Fellows may also have opportunities to gain practical experience through placements and engagement with relevant government institutions and partner organisations.
