The Nigerian Army has operationalised three new infantry battalions in Zamfara State as part of efforts to strengthen security and enhance its operational effectiveness across the state.
The newly activated units are the 12 Infantry Battalion, Bakura; 23 Infantry Battalion, Kaura Namoda; and 28 Infantry Battalion, Anka.
The Army said the deployment is aimed at expanding operational coverage, improving rapid response capability and securing the respective Areas of Responsibility of the three battalions.
Speaking during the ceremonies, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force, North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General B.P. Koughna, represented by the Acting Commander, 1 Brigade, Colonel Joseph Umaru, reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to sustaining operations aimed at protecting law-abiding citizens.
Colonel Umaru said lasting peace required a coordinated effort involving the military, other security agencies, traditional institutions and members of the public.
He urged residents of Zamfara State to support security agencies by providing timely, credible and actionable intelligence.
The Acting Brigade Commander also charged the newly deployed troops to maintain discipline, professionalism and operational vigilance while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities in accordance with established Rules of Engagement.
In separate remarks, the Emir of Bakura, Alhaji Bello Sani; Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Muhammad Ahmad; and Emir of Kaura Namoda, Major Dr Sanusi Mohammed Ahmed Asha (rtd), commended the Nigerian Army for establishing the additional battalions.
The traditional rulers described the deployment as an important step towards restoring peace and safety in communities across the state.
They pledged the support and cooperation of the traditional institution, particularly through community mobilisation and information sharing with security agencies.
