Arsenal have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign captain Bruno Guimaraes in a deal worth £75 million, with the Brazilian midfielder now set to undergo a medical, according to Sky Sports.
The Premier League champions saw an initial offer rejected, but negotiations have now resulted in an agreement that paves the way for the 28-year-old to complete his move to the Emirates.
Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle from Lyon in 2022 for £40 million, had informed the club earlier this summer that he wanted to join Arsenal if an acceptable offer was received.
The Brazil international leaves St James’ Park after making 195 appearances and scoring 31 goals. He still had two years remaining on his contract, with Newcastle also holding an option to extend the deal by another year.
According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, Newcastle were determined to keep their captain and would only consider selling if the player requested a move and Arsenal met the club’s valuation.
“Newcastle were desperate to keep Bruno Guimaraes and if he had said he wanted to stay, Newcastle would have refused any offer from Arsenal or any other club,” Downie said.
He added that the midfielder remained firm in his desire to leave because he viewed the move as his “last big opportunity to win titles.”
Downie also noted that Newcastle insisted on handling the transfer professionally, with Guimaraes reporting for the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain despite ongoing negotiations.
“Newcastle feel Guimaraes has complied with their demands immaculately. They did not want a repeat of the Alexander Isak situation,” he said.
The deal will see Newcastle earn more than £240 million from player sales this summer, following the departures of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham.
