Atiku reacts as police invite Edo, Kano politicians over threats

Daily Post about 5 hours 2 mins read

The 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the invitation extended to two politicians over their alleged involvement in recent weapon-related threats.

DAILY POST reports that the Kano State Police Command invited a chieftain of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) over an alleged display of a firearm at a political gathering in the state.

Similarly, the Edo State Police Command invited the chairman of the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarrett Tenebe, over his widely reported “AK-47 fire” remark.

Reacting, Atiku, in a statement by his media aide, Paul Ibe, commended the move by the security agencies, describing the alleged actions of the two politicians as condemnable.

He, however, stated that such a “principle must apply equally to everybody,” stressing that “Nigeria cannot afford a system in which an opposition politician is swiftly invited over alleged intimidation while similar conduct by members of the ruling party attracts a different response.”

Ibe named Esan West Local Government Chairman Blessing Ebhodaghe, Kuje Area Council Chairman Danjuma Shekwolo and Borno State Commissioner Sainna Buba as politicians who, according to him, are yet to be invited by the police over their alleged threats.

According to him, “Nigerians deserve to know what became of investigations into these and similar cases. The investigations must never enter into voicemail.

“As the 2027 general elections approach, selective enforcement would be particularly dangerous. It can embolden offenders, encourage retaliation and deepen public distrust in the security agencies.”
