The ancient streets of Okere Community pulsed with life as the 529th edition of the Awankere Festival, popularly known as Okere Juju, unfolded in a blaze of color, rhythm, and reverence. Sponsored by Eagle Aromatic Schnapps, the authentic traditional prayer drink, the festival dating back to 1497 once again proved why it remains one of Nigeria’s most enduring cultural spectacles.
At its core, the Awankere Festival is a spiritual homage to fertility, peace, and unity. Priests performed ancestral rites, invoking blessings upon the land and its people. The festival’s watch night party, a social prelude to the grand celebration, was electric. Youths reveled in music, dance, and laughter, discovering fresh talents from the community. The phrase “Itsekiri big boy Aiyeri” echoed through conversations — a nod to Ayiri Emami, the prominent businessman and philanthropist whose name has become synonymous with Itsekiri pride.
For many Itsekiris abroad, the festival was a spiritual homecoming. Richard Okeke, who traveled from Houston, USA, said: “I plan my summer around Awankere. It’s not just about watching the masquerades—it’s about reconnecting with family, eating our food again, and feeling the pulse of Warri. This festival reminds us that no matter how far we go, our roots are here.”
Tosan Olomu, an Itsekiri living in London, added: “Coming home for Awankere is more than nostalgia, it’s a reconnection with our roots. Watching the masquerades run through the market square reminds me that our culture is alive, thriving, and worth celebrating.”
Similarly, Dr. Ejiro Okoloko, an academic based in Toronto, emphasized the festival’s cultural magnetism: “Awankere is our living archive. Every agogo beat, every masquerade run is history in motion. Coming home during summer to witness this reminds us that our heritage is not frozen in time—it evolves, and we are part of that evolution.”
The masquerades, draped in dazzling regalia of raffia and flowing fabrics, charged through the market square in ritual races that electrified the crowd. Each dramatic run was more than spectacle—it was a reenactment of ancestral myths, a living dialogue between the past and present.
Beyond its spiritual significance, Awankere has become a cultural magnet that fuels Warri’s economy. Hotels reported full occupancy, restaurants stocked up on ingredients for Itsekiri delicacies, transport operators increased schedules, and artisans prepared new outfits and crafts for sale. As one hotel manager put it: “Awankere is our busiest season. We prepare months ahead because once the drums start, Warri becomes the center of the world.”
The 529th Awankere Festival was more than a cultural event—it was a living testament to the resilience of Itsekiri traditions. By blending religion, tourism, and commerce, Okere Community showcased how heritage can thrive in modern times.
