Football pundit and Cadena SER journalist, Fernando Palomo, has slammed France captain. Kylian Mbappe over his display in Real Madrid’s 2-1 La Liga defeat to Atletico Madrid over the weekend.
Following a scoreless opening half at the Wanda Metropolitano, Madrid defender, Dean Huijsen received a red card for a foul on Giuliano Simeone inside the penalty area, allowing Alejandro Grimaldo to convert from the spot.
Atletico Madrid extended their lead shortly before the hour mark, with Simeone providing an assist for Jonathan David.
Antonio Rudiger scored for the visiting team with one minute remaining; however, the Rojiblancos held on to secure the victory.
Mbappe appeared largely disconnected from play, particularly after Madrid were reduced to 10 men.
Palomo said, according to Foot Mercato: “Mbappe didn’t play a match worthy of a player who constantly claims to deserve the Ballon d’Or. He was an ordinary player in a match that requires top-level players.”
According to Sofascore data, Mbappe registered just one attempt on goal during the 90-minute match, which was off target, while another shot was blocked.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup champion completed 21 of 25 passes, including 14 of 18 in the attacking third, and delivered one long pass.
Following an exceptional 2025-26 season for both his club and country, Mbappe is among the leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award. During the previous season, he scored 42 goals across all competitions, finishing as La Liga’s top scorer with 25 goals and the UEFA Champions League’s top scorer with 15 goals.
The Frenchman subsequently scored 10 goals during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held in North America, securing the Golden Boot and becoming the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 22 goals, while France finished in fourth place.
