BBNaija 11: Neche’s exit adds new twist as eight Housemates face eviction tonight

By Ayo Onikoyi

The Big Brother Naija Season 11 house has been thrown into another twist following the voluntary exit of Neche Maduagwu, even as eight housemates face possible eviction in Sunday’s live show.

Neche’s decision to leave the “Show Ya Sef” house on Sunday, August 16, came shortly after she had served as Head of House, making her departure particularly unexpected. According to Big Brother Naija organisers, the 25-year-old voluntarily exited the competition to attend to “pressing personal matters” requiring her immediate attention.

Before leaving, Neche reportedly informed her fellow housemates of her decision, removed her microphone and name tag, and proceeded to the Diary Room. The organisers said they respected her decision and wished her success outside the show.

Her departure has also revived memories of other housemates who have walked away from the reality show before their time, as well as those who contemplated doing so but eventually remained.

Neche joins a small group of voluntary exits

Since BBNaija began in 2006, only a handful of housemates have actually left the competition voluntarily, as opposed to being evicted, disqualified or removed as part of a Big Brother twist.

Kayvee became the first notable case in the modern BBNaija era when he voluntarily left Season 6, “Shine Ya Eye,” in 2021 because of health-related concerns. Big Brother announced that the decision followed consultations with professionals.

Four years later, Sabrina Idukpaye voluntarily left Season 10, “Ten Over Ten,” on medical grounds. She told her fellow housemates that she had to leave for medical reasons after experiencing health concerns, while the organisers confirmed that she had consulted with Big Brother and the on-site medical team before her departure.

Neche has now become the latest addition to that short list, bringing the number of confirmed voluntary exits to three.

Several others wanted out but stayed

While voluntary exits remain relatively rare, a number of housemates have at different points threatened, contemplated or come close to walking away.

During Season 10, Kayikunmi openly told Faith that he wanted to voluntarily exit amid tensions surrounding his relationships and the pressure of life in the house. He eventually remained in the competition but was later evicted alongside Otega.

Faith also contemplated leaving Season 10, describing the experience at one point as a “waste of my time” and questioning the benefits of remaining in the competition. He ultimately stayed.

The All Stars edition in 2023 produced several similar moments. Angel became so frustrated following a confrontation with Ilebaye that she began packing her belongings and threatened to leave. Mercy Eke and Venita Akpofure intervened and persuaded her to reconsider.

Pere also contemplated leaving the All Stars house, telling fellow housemates that the energy in the house was getting to him and that he was considering asking Big Brother to let him go. He eventually stayed.

Cross later revealed that he had also reached a point during the All Stars season when the atmosphere became so toxic that he genuinely wanted to leave. He stayed and eventually became one of the finalists.

Lucy and Alex also had moments during the All Stars season when they considered voluntary exits, while Chinwe of Season 9 similarly discussed the possibility of leaving amid tensions surrounding her relationship with Zion.

Season 11 has already produced its own share of exit talk. Abi, who recently emerged as Head of House, had earlier expressed frustration and suggested that she could leave the competition. Bells has also talked about going home and was reported to have packed her bags in anticipation of leaving following further disagreements in the house.

None of these housemates, however, actually completed a voluntary exit.

One other famous case that should not be confused with voluntary departure is Nini’s disappearance during Season 6. While housemates initially suspected that she had left, Big Brother had secretly moved her to a separate room as part of a task. It was therefore not a voluntary exit.

Eight housemates now face the public vote

As the house adjusts to Neche’s sudden departure, the competition is moving into another crucial phase, with eight housemates facing possible eviction this Sunday.

They are Yusuf, Araga, Temi Nkem, Goddessa, Cassi, Nomy, Tram and Gerard.

The nomination process followed Abi’s victory in the Head of House challenge. Her win gave her immunity and extended protection to members of her task team. Chimsom Chuka also secured individual immunity after emerging as the strongest performer from the opposing team.

Abi and her team were subsequently allowed to save two housemates from possible eviction. They chose Bells and Bluethopia.

However, Big Brother introduced another twist by asking Abi to select three members of her own immune team to join the eviction list. She chose Yusuf, Aikou and Araga, reshaping the nomination line-up.

The final list therefore comprised Yusuf, Araga, Temi Nkem, Goddessa, Cassi, Nomy, Tram and Gerard.

With Neche already out of the game by choice, the eight nominees now face a very different kind of pressure — one in which their fate rests with viewers rather than their own decisions.

The latest developments have added another layer of uncertainty to a season that has already produced shifting alliances, relationship tensions, strategic manoeuvring and unexpected exits.

For the eight nominees, however, there is no voluntary option to simply walk away and retain their place in the competition. By Sunday, at least one more housemate will have to leave the “Show Ya Sef” house through the traditional route — the public vote.
