Be transparent to electricity consumers – Abia govt tells electricity companies

Daily Post about 6 hours 2 mins read

Abia State government has told electricity generation and distribution companies operating in the State to be transparent and fair to electricity consumers and other investors in the State.

The State’s Commissioner for Power and Public utilities, Ikechukwu Monday stated this on Thursday during a public consultation on draft regulations organized by the Abia State Electricity Regulation Authority, ASERA,  for consumers and other stakeholders.

Monday, who noted that a customer is the king in an economy, said that such customer deserves quality, transparent and fair services.

He explained that the public consultation, which was organized to get feedback from consumers, would

help ASERA to  achieve the objectives of Abia state government in the electricity sector, including the resolution of customers complaints.

“And like they say, the customer is the king, so it’s not just the key player, but the customer is a very critical stakeholder,” Monday stated.

He noted that 120,000  electricity meters have been deployed to power consumers in Aba ring-fenced areas in the past six months by Aba Power and Geometric, assuring that Abia State government is out to replicate the feat in the remaining parts of the State.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority ASERA,  Mr. Emeka Onyegbule said that the public consultation was to rub minds with consumers and stakeholders in coming up with a working document.

He maintained that the agency, which took over power regulation functions from the Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission, NERC, in 2025, would ensure that consumers and other investors are not cheated.

Speaking at the event, a senior staff of Aba Power  Emeka Victor Ngwoke lamented incessant vandalization of his company’s property by criminals, and appealed to Abia State government to establish a special court that would be trying and jailing arrested offenders.
