The Benue State Police Command has brought together political party leaders, candidates, security agencies and other stakeholders in the state to sign a Peace Accord aimed at promoting peaceful political activities and strengthening security during the electoral period.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, Police Public Relations Officer, for the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, on September 16, 2026.
The engagement, held in Makurdi on September 15, 2026, had in attendance state chairmen of political parties, flag bearers and candidates, representatives of sister security and law enforcement agencies, as well as other stakeholders.
The participants reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful campaigns, respect for the rule of law and the protection of lives and property throughout the electoral process.
Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Cletus C. N. Nwadiogbu, urged political leaders and candidates to ensure that their supporters conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly.
He warned against the recruitment or use of political thugs, cult groups and other criminal elements to intimidate opponents or disrupt lawful political activities.
The political parties and candidates subsequently signed the Peace Accord, demonstrating their commitment to rejecting political violence, respecting the rights of other political actors and cooperating with security agencies to maintain peace.
The Commissioner assured all political parties and candidates that the Police Command would remain professional, impartial and committed to providing adequate security for all lawful political activities.
He further urged stakeholders to maintain effective communication with the Police and other security agencies, particularly regarding planned rallies, campaigns and other major political activities.
The Command called on political leaders, candidates, supporters and members of the public to uphold the spirit of the Peace Accord and work collectively towards peaceful and credible political activities across Benue State.
