Nollywood actress Blessing Obasi has addressed the criticism she received from some Christians following her portrayal of a lesbian character in the Netflix series Blood Sisters 2.
Speaking in an interview with Yanga FM, the actress explained that her role as an actor requires her to interpret different characters and should not be mistaken for her personal beliefs or lifestyle.
Blessing said the character was part of a story inspired by realities that exist in society, stressing that the production was focused on telling a story rather than promoting any lifestyle.
“We are telling a real story about things that truly happen,” she said.
The actress revealed that some people questioned why she would accept such a role as a Christian, but she explained that actors are often required to step into different characters to bring stories to life.
“They said, ‘As a child of God, how would I take such a role?’ And I said, ‘We are telling real stories of what happens in the prison,’” she said.
She added that the production team was careful in its approach.
“The production company was sensitive enough not to depict the horridness of it. They are not in support of it (lesbianism), but they are telling the story,” Blessing explained.
Despite the backlash, the actress said she chooses to focus on the support she receives from viewers rather than negative reactions.
“There is so much positivity. I put my mind on that,” she said.
Blessing also shared that she responds to harsh comments with compassion, noting that people who attack others may be dealing with personal challenges.
Rather than reacting negatively, she said she prays for them and hopes they experience God’s love.
In Blood Sisters 2, released globally on Netflix on June 5, Blessing plays Mimi, a powerful inmate in the prison where Sarah and Kemi are held. Her character has drawn attention due to the portrayal of same-sex relationships and power dynamics within the prison setting.
