Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha brought the house down at the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards on Saturday when they recreated one of Nollywood’s most talked-about moments of the year — the viral exchange between actresses Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham that set social media ablaze.
The two co-hosts of the AMVCA12 ceremony seized their moment on stage to dramatise the widely discussed incident, which originally unfolded at the premiere of the film The Return of Arinzo at the Balmoral Event Centre, where Akindele appeared to ignore Abraham’s greeting while acknowledging other colleagues present.
In the comedic reenactment, Mbatha took on the role of Akindele while Bovi portrayed Abraham, delivering a punchline that drew thunderous laughter from the audience.
Bovi said, “Aunty, aunty Funke… mtcheeww. If I ever present award to you, call me bastard.”
Bovi quipped in character, sending the room into uproar.
The original incident had sparked intense debate across Nigerian social media platforms, with many commentators noting the irony that it occurred barely weeks after Akindele had made a public appeal for greater unity and collaboration among practitioners in the Nigerian film industry.
The premiere footage showed Abraham warmly greeting several actresses, including Iyabo Ojo and Mercy Aigbe, before approaching Akindele, who visibly failed to reciprocate the gesture.
The AMVCA reenactment transformed what had been a source of industry tension into a moment of shared laughter, with many attendees and online viewers applauding Bovi and Mbatha for their comedic timing and willingness to address the elephant in the room.
