CNG: Tinubu reacts as transport fares drop by N1,000 in Abuja

Daily Post about 2 hours 2 mins read

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reacted to reports of reductions in transportation fares in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, following the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas, CNG-powered buses.

This comes amid a viral video released as part of the Federal Government and Nigeria Governors’ Forum’s national Affordable CNG Transport Programme.

In the video, some commuters said the CNG initiative had reduced transportation fares from Masaka to Berger in Abuja from N1,500 to N500, representing a N1,000 reduction.

Reacting to the development, Tinubu, in a post on his official X account on Sunday, said:

“I know what that means when you have a family to feed, bills to pay and other responsibilities waiting at home.”

Meanwhile, the video and Tinubu’s reaction have generated mixed reactions on X, with some users praising the initiative while others criticised it.

Checks by DAILY POST showed that fares on CNG-powered buses from Berger to Nyanya Junction stood at N500.

However, the buses were rarely available, forcing most commuters to board other commercial vehicles.

Recall that Tinubu had promised cheaper transportation fares across Nigeria from October 1, 2026, through the CNG initiative.

However, DAILY POST reports that many Nigerians are yet to experience the promised reduction in transportation fares.

The development comes amid ongoing debate over the Federal Government’s proposed 30-day fuel discount at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL.
