A win for England would reduce the slowly growing pressure on Thomas Tuchel; a defeat would give it more fertiliser and leave England up against it in the admittedly not-that-important battle to reach the Nations League quarter-finals.

England did a lot of good things against Spain on Saturday, and losing to the best team in the world should never be a crime. But rightly or wrongly, the mood around the England team has been febrile since their collapse against Argentina, so tonight matters. A good result – and an emphatic performance – would come in handy.
