Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, yesterday morning received Baboucarr Ousmaila Joof, The Gambi’s defence minister at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The chairperson welcomed the minister’s visit, noting the importance of continued engagement on matters of peace, security and stability in The Gambia and the wider West African region. The discussions included the commission’s support to The Gambia in its contribution to regional peace and stability.
Chairperson Youssouf and Minister Joof exchanged views on the evolving political and security situation in West Africa, with particular attention to the Sahel and Casamance region. They underscored the importance of peaceful political processes, constitutional governance, and sustained regional efforts to address shared security challenges.
The chairperson reaffirmed the commission’s continued engagement with The Gambia and its commitment to advancing peace, stability and democratic governance across continent.
Minister Joof was accompanied by Ambassador Jainaba Jagne, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of The Gambia to the AU.
