The Ebonyi State Ministry of Capital City Development and Urban Planning has demolished unapproved structures erected along major roads and streets in Abakaliki metropolis.
The exercise was part of the ministry’s ongoing building control and environmental sanitation enforcement aimed at promoting orderly urban development and maintaining a clean environment in the state capital.
The demolition was carried out during a joint inspection led by the Commissioner for Capital City Development and Urban Planning, Hon. Richard Ugo Idike, alongside the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Martina Obia, Head of Department of Town Planning, Mrs. Esther Nwite, members of the ministry’s management team and other officials.
The inspection team visited areas including Nise Street through Edda Street, Afikpo Road, Lot 3 by Express Highway and Agwu Street, where illegally constructed shops obstructing roadways were removed to restore free movement for pedestrians and motorists.
Idike said the action was necessary to enforce the state’s building regulations and prevent encroachment on public infrastructure.
He also disclosed that residents in several parts of the capital city were directed to clear blocked drainage channels around their properties.
The commissioner stressed that maintaining unobstructed drainage systems was critical to preventing flooding, protecting public health and ensuring a cleaner urban environment.
He warned property owners and developers against violating approved building plans or engaging in activities that obstruct roads, drainage channels and other public facilities.
Idike said the ministry would continue regular inspections across the capital city to ensure compliance with urban planning regulations.
The Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Martina Obia, urged residents to cooperate with the ministry by maintaining clean surroundings and adhering to government directives aimed at improving the city.
She assured that the state government remained committed to creating a safe, orderly and environmentally friendly capital city.
The ministry reaffirmed its determination to sustain building control and environmental monitoring exercises, urging residents to support government efforts towards achieving planned urban development and a healthier environment.
