The Ebonyi State Government has ordered the immediate confiscation of substandard construction materials discovered at a road project site along Ogbaga Road in Ebonyi Local Government Area, issuing a stern warning to contractors against compromising on quality.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner for Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Sunday Inyima, during a statewide inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects.
The Commissioner ordered the contractor handling the Ogbaga Road project to suspend all operations until a formal commitment is made to adhere strictly to approved engineering designs and specifications.
He accused some contractors of deliberately undermining the infrastructure strides of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration by deploying inferior materials.
Characterising such actions as “economic sabotage”, Inyima warned that the state would no longer tolerate shoddy workmanship and that defaulting contractors now face arrest and prosecution.
”From all indications, we may have to conduct future inspections with security personnel because the arrest of defaulting contractors at project sites is becoming inevitable,” Inyima warned.
While some sites faced halts, others received commendation for compliance and progress.
At the University of Aeronautics (Faculty Building), the commissioner praised the site engineers for their quality of work and urged them to maintain speed without compromising approved standards.
The monitoring team revisited several sites previously inspected on Monday, including the male and female hostels at the ICT University, Oferekpe; the Oferekpe Internal Road; the Ogbaga Road/Randa Bridge; and the Ebonyi State Teaching Hospital, Nwofe.
During these follow-up visits, Inyima expressed strong dissatisfaction at the absence of key technical personnel.
He ordered an immediate halt on all sections operating without qualified site engineers or approved working drawings.
Reiterating the administration’s policy, the commissioner emphasised that Governor Nwifuru has prioritised high-quality infrastructure across the education, healthcare, industrial, and transport sectors.
To enforce this, the Ebonyi State Ministry of Project Monitoring and Evaluation will continue to conduct aggressive, unannounced inspections across all three senatorial zones.
All contractors handling government contracts have been directed to strictly comply with the ministry’s previously issued public service advisory or face severe sanctions.
