Ebonyi lacks quality representation at national assembly, says Labour Party chieftain

The Labour Party’s House of Representatives candidate for Abakaliki/Izzi Federal Constituency in the 2023 general election, Dr. Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh, has called for improved representation for Ebonyi State in the National Assembly, urging voters to critically assess the performance of incumbent federal lawmakers ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In posts shared on his official social media platforms, Ezeh argued that the state has not received the quality of representation needed to strengthen democracy, good governance and accountability.

He urged the electorate to evaluate the performance of their senators and members of the House of Representatives before deciding whether they deserve another term in office.

According to him, improving the calibre of those elected to the National Assembly is essential for deepening democratic governance and ensuring effective oversight of the executive arm of government.

Ezeh also criticised the handling of the 2026 Electoral Act by the current National Assembly, saying the lawmakers had not done enough to merit re-election.

He further questioned the implications of returning the current lawmakers to office, particularly in the event of any future constitutional amendment seeking to alter presidential tenure.

In one of the posts, he urged Ebonyi voters to make informed decisions at the polls rather than allowing political interests to influence their choices.

In another post titled “Party Supremacy Is Gone!”, Ezeh warned against electing leaders whom he alleged could support measures that undermine democratic principles or fail to hold the executive accountable.

He also disclosed that the Labour Party in Ebonyi North had adopted what he described as a more inclusive political approach aimed at accommodating the zone’s diversity and building a united front ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to him, the approach is intended to produce credible leadership alternatives and strengthen the party’s prospects in the state.

Ezeh maintained that the 2027 elections should be driven by character, capacity and competence, adding that only leaders who possess those qualities should be entrusted with public office.

He said the initiative aligns with his proposal for a “Rainbow Coalition” and urged party supporters and the public to await the formal unveiling of the Labour Party’s political plans ahead of the next general election.
