BENIN CITY – The member representing Akoko-Edo I Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, Donald Okogbe, on Monday emerged as the new Speaker of the assembly, shortly after the resignation of the former Speaker, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku.
The reins of the assembly were temporarily taken over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Osamwonyi Atu, who presided over plenary during which Idaiye was elected Speaker.
Idaiye is currently the longest-serving member of the assembly from Edo North, having been a member of the House since 2019.
Agbebaku’s resignation came amid moves by lawmakers to remove him from office. Sources said about 18 of the 22 members had signed a notice seeking his impeachment.
It was gathered that some of the lawmakers backing the move were among those who lost their chances of returning to the House after the next election.
