BENIN CITY – The member representing Akoko-Edo I Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, Yekini Idiaye, on Monday emerged as the new Speaker of the assembly, shortly after the former Speaker, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, resigned his position.
The reins of the assembly were temporarily taken over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Osamwonyi Atu, who presided over plenary during which Idiaye emerged as the new Speaker.
Idiaye is currently the longest-serving member of the House from Edo North, having been a member since 2019.
It was gathered that Agbebaku chose to resign after discovering that about 18 of the 22 members had signed an impeachment notice against him, with most of them reportedly being members who had lost their return tickets to the House.
