Edo Assembly Passes Revised Laws Bill, Advances Fire Service Legislation

 

The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a Bill for a Law to provide for a Revised Edition of the Laws of Edo State and the preparation, printing and publication of the revised laws of the state, as well as other matters incidental thereto.

The bill was passed during Wednesday’s plenary following its accelerated consideration. The House invoked Rule 20 and relaxed Rule 46 to allow for its speedy passage, citing the importance of the legislation to governance.

Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, thanked members for their continued support and cooperation.

Leading the debate on the Executive Bill, the Majority Leader, Jonathan Ibhamawu, described the legislation as timely and necessary, noting that legal practitioners, citizens, lawmakers and government institutions had found it difficult to access the laws of the state.

He said the passage of the bill would codify all existing laws of Edo State into a single, central document, making them more accessible.

Other lawmakers who spoke in support of the bill included the member representing Ovia North East I, Hon Charity Aiguobarueghian; the member representing Esan North East I, Hon Adeh Isibor; the member representing Esan North East II, Rt Hon Maria Edeko; and the member representing Akoko-Edo II, Hon Donald Okogbe. They said the legislation would serve as a working document for the effective dispensation of justice.

The lawmakers also expressed the view that the revised laws would create a central repository for the state’s laws, bridge gaps in law-making and reduce the duplication of laws.

The Speaker thereafter directed the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Audu Yahaya Omogbai, to prepare clean copies of the bill for the assent of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Also at plenary, the House debated a Bill for a Law to establish and regulate the Edo State Fire Fighting Service, provide for the organisation’s functions and duties, ensure the preservation of lives, property and the environment through fire prevention, control and rescue operations, uphold human rights standards, and provide for other connected purposes.

Following extensive debate on the merits of the bill, the Speaker referred it to the House Committee on Environment and Security for further scrutiny, with a mandate to report back to the House in two weeks.

Under other announcements, Speaker Agbebaku urged farmers across the state to take advantage of the availability of farming equipment through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

He encouraged farmers to hire the equipment at subsidised rates to improve agricultural productivity and yields during the current farming season.

The House subsequently adjourned plenary until August 17 2026.
