The Edo State Security Squad has directed business owners across the state to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at their premises as part of measures to strengthen security and combat crime.
The spokesperson for the Edo State Security Squad, Noah Idemudia, gave the directive while briefing journalists in Benin City on Monday, setting July 30, 2026, as the deadline for compliance.
Idemudia said the installation of functional CCTV cameras would enhance the capacity of security agencies to investigate crimes, identify suspects and gather vital evidence for prosecution.
He urged members of the business community to support the government’s security efforts by installing effective surveillance systems within their business premises.
“Business owners are encouraged to install effective, working cameras within their business premises. We appeal to the general public and the business community to comply for everyone’s safety,” he said.
According to him, footage obtained from CCTV cameras would provide investigators with crucial evidence needed to unravel criminal activities and improve public safety across the state.
The spokesman also issued a stern warning against planned “7/7” celebrations reportedly being organised by cult groups, stressing that security agencies were fully prepared to apprehend and prosecute anyone involved.
“We are already taking action. You cannot carry out such acts in Benin City. Even if you go outside Benin, you will still be apprehended.
“So there is no point,” he warned.
He advised anyone planning to participate in the celebrations to abandon the idea, noting that offenders would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
On community security, Idemudia reiterated the need to identify and profile recognised community leaders across Edo State in collaboration with the Oba of Benin Palace.
He cautioned individuals falsely parading themselves as community leaders to desist, warning that anyone found impersonating recognised leaders would face legal action.
The spokesperson further disclosed that the Edo State Security Squad recently arrested two suspects in Auchi and Uromi over alleged cultism and unlawful possession of firearms.
He said the suspects would be arraigned before the mobile court established by the Edo State Government to accelerate the prosecution of persons accused of cultism, kidnapping and other related offences.
