Edo Hospital Gets Full Accreditation For Residency Programmes, Hails Okpebholo’s Health Reforms

 

The Edo Specialist Hospital, Benin City, has commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for significant progress it has recorded since his assumption of office, listing the full accreditation it recently received for its residency training programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as well as for its Family Medicine and Dentistry departments, seven years after the tertiary facility was established.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Anthonia Njoku, disclosed this on Monday during a press conference and media tour organised to mark the hospital’s seventh anniversary.

According to her, the full accreditation for Obstetrics and Gynaecology was awarded by both the West African College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, while accreditation for Family Medicine and Dentistry was also recently completed.

She said the milestone positions the Edo Specialist Hospital to train more doctors and expand specialist healthcare delivery across the state.

Dr. Njoku also commended Okpebholo for providing In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) equipment to support couples experiencing infertility.

She said the newly acquired equipment would expand access to reproductive healthcare in the state and give hope to couples unable to conceive naturally.

“In reproductive healthcare, many couples who find it difficult to have their babies will now receive assistance through the IVF programme,” she said.

The CMD attributed the hospital’s progress to the support of the state government.

She noted that the governor approved the absorption of 126 contract workers into the Edo State workforce and granted the hospital authority to recruit additional medical personnel, leading to more than 290 direct employments.

She added that the hospital had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mudiame University, Irrua, to serve as a teaching hospital for the training of medical students.

“The partnership strengthens our role as both a healthcare provider and a training institution,” she said.

Dr. Njoku further disclosed that the hospital now offers Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care, CEmONC, services to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

She said the facility is also enrolled on both the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme and the National Health Insurance Authority platform, enabling it to provide services to beneficiaries of state and federal health insurance programmes.

The anniversary event concluded with a guided tour of the hospital’s facilities led by Dr. Suleman Ozemoka, for journalists to inspect the new equipment and services available at the institution.
