A devastating thunderstorm has claimed the lives of six children from the same extended family after lightning struck the tree where they had taken shelter while harvesting groundnuts in Adamawa State.
The tragedy occurred around 4 p.m. on Sunday in Dadiri-Tirgali village, Garum District of Ganye Local Government Area during a heavy downpour.
According to Daily Trust, the children were working on the family farm when the rain began. They reportedly gathered under a tree for cover, but moments later, lightning struck, killing six of them instantly and leaving four others injured.
The deceased were identified as Abdulrahman Musa, 7; Aliyu Sule Maunde, 10; Jaafar Sule Maunde, 10; Bilkisu Jibrin Maunde, 20; Musa Ahmadu, 9; and Auwalu Nuhu, 11.
The injured, Nasiru Abubakar, 7; Rilwanu Ahmadu, 9; Sa’adatu Isa, 35; and her one-year-three-month-old daughter, Hasiya Isa, were taken to the General Hospital in Ganye for treatment.
One of the grieving fathers, Musa Maude, who lost both a son and a grandson, said he had sent the children to harvest groundnuts before the rain began.
“I sent them to the farm that afternoon. While they were harvesting, the rain started falling heavily,” he said.
He recalled receiving a distress call from one of the survivors before rushing to the farm.
“When we got there, we found eight of them lying under the tree. Sadly, the doctors confirmed that six of the children had died.”
Another bereaved father, Suleiman Maude, who lost his two sons, described the incident as heartbreaking after returning home from work because of the rain.
Survivor Sa’adatu Isa said she had asked the children to gather under the tree and share the only umbrella she had.
“We were just talking and waiting for the rain to stop when suddenly there was a loud sound. After that, I remembered nothing.”
The six victims were buried on Monday morning in accordance with Islamic rites after their families reportedly took the bodies home from the hospital.
