Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has criticised Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez over his involvement in Chuba Akpom’s goal during the Premier League match against Ipswich Town.
The Red Devils managed to recover from a goal deficit to decisively defeat the Tractor Boys 5-2 at Old Trafford.
Leif Davis opened the scoring for Ipswich in the 29th minute, but Manchester United equalised 11 minutes later when Bruno Fernandes scored, bringing the score to 1-1 at the break.
After the interval, United turned the match around, taking the lead with an own goal from Jacob Greaves, followed by Fernandes extending their lead with a penalty in the 61st minute.
The Portugal international then completed his hat-trick midway through the second half, and Bryan Mbeumo added a fifth goal in the 82nd minute.
Akpom, however, scored in the first minute of stoppage time.
The Super Eagles hopeful, who came on at the beginning of the second half to replace Emerson, scored after Julio Enciso dispossessed Martínez and created the opportunity.
In a discussion on BBC Radio 5 Live from Old Trafford, Robinson criticised Manchester United for their lack of focus, attributing the lapse to Martínez, which allowed Ipswich to capitalise on the mistake.
“Manchester United switched off there. Lisandro Martinez was over confident and he was robbed by Julio Enciso, who has been Ipswich’s best player today. Chuba Akpom gets a tap in,” he stated.
This goal marked a significant milestone for Akpom, as it was his first-ever Premier League goal after making six appearances and totalling 97 minutes of play for Arsenal and Ipswich Town.
