Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina international goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa on a three-year contract.
The 33-year-old joins the Blues after six seasons at Villa, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers.
Martinez, who was part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning team, said he was delighted to join Chelsea and believes the move is the right fit for his ambitions.
“I’m delighted to be at this football club,” Martinez said. “Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I’m just over the moon – I can’t wait to get started.
“I want to be successful here. I’m someone who wants to win at everything I do and I want to bring that here to this football club because it’s a football club that wins titles, so I think it’s a good match.”
The goalkeeper also promised to give his best for his new club and supporters.
“I’m all passion and I play with my heart. I will give 100 per cent every game, every training session to make the club, my teammates and the supporters proud,” he added.
Martinez began his career in the youth system of Independiente before joining Arsenal in August 2010 at the age of 17.
After a series of loan spells to gain first-team experience, he became Arsenal’s regular goalkeeper towards the end of the 2019/20 season, starting their final 11 matches and helping the club win the FA Cup.
He also won the Community Shield at the start of the following season before moving to Aston Villa in September 2020.
During his time at Villa, Martínez made 256 appearances across six seasons and helped the club win the UEFA Europa League in May.
His performances at club and international level have earned him widespread recognition. Martínez made his Argentina debut in June 2021 and has since become the country’s first-choice goalkeeper, winning two Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 World Cup.
He has also won the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the world’s best-performing goalkeeper, at the 2023 and 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremonies.
Martínez now begins a new chapter at Chelsea as the club’s latest addition ahead of the new season.
