According veteran journalist and a former minister of information Demba Jawo, he has received an email purportedly from the US embassy revoking his ten years visa.
Jawo occasionally travels to the US where his daughters live.
“On 16th September, 2026, I received an email, purportedly from the US embassy in Banjul, telling me that my five-year US visa, which was scheduled to expire in 2029, has been revoked.
I have no idea what prompted the revocation, but according to the email; “This action is based on the fact that after visa issuance, information has come to light indicating that you may be ineligible for your visa.”
The Standard understands that often such actions are taken against people critical of the US administration online. Visa applicants are often requested to provide their social media handles for verification.
But according to Jawo he is only often in disagreement with American policy when it comes to Israel and its Prime Minster Netanyahu. “I am still seeking clarifications from the US embassy as to why”, he said.
