FG Commences Reconstruction Of Failed Expansion Joint On Kara Bridge, FRSC Releases Advisory

 

The Federal Government has commenced reconstruction of the failed expansion joint on Kara Bridge (Outward Lagos) along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

A statement signed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command’s Sector Public Education Officer, SRC Elizabeth Jayeola, said work started on the bridge on Tuesday, 28th July, 2026.  The exercise is expected to last for two weeks.

 

 

Quoting the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, the Corps noted that the reconstruction is a critical safety intervention aimed at preventing crashes, preserving the structural integrity of the bridge, and ensuring safer travel for all road users.

He explained that to create a safe working environment for the construction team, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch, which will inevitably result in traffic congestion, particularly on the outward Lagos-Ibadan corridor.

To reduce traffic volume and ease pressure on the affected corridor, the Sector Commander appealed to organisations, institutions, and businesses whose operations permit remote work to allow their employees to work from home during the period of the reconstruction.

According to him, this measure will significantly reduce vehicular traffic and relieve commuters of unnecessary delays and stress.

 

 

Motorists are also encouraged to plan their journeys ahead, travel outside peak periods where possible, and make use of alternative routes, including the Ikorodu – Sagamu Expressway and the Lekki – Epe Expressway.

Corps Commander Hamzat urged motorists to exercise patience, drive cautiously, obey traffic officials deployed along the corridor, and strictly comply with all traffic advisories throughout the construction period.

He further warned motorists against driving against traffic (one-way driving) or violating established traffic management measures, stressing that offenders will be apprehended and sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations.

The statement further noted that the FRSC Lagos Sector Command, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works, the Ogun State Ministry of Transportation, traffic management agencies, and other emergency responders, has deployed adequate traffic control personnel and operational resources to minimise disruption, facilitate traffic flow, and ensure the safety of both motorists and construction workers.

The Command appealed for the understanding, patience, and cooperation of all road users, noting that the temporary inconvenience is necessary to achieve a safer and more durable Kara-Opic Bridge for the benefit of the motoring public.
